UPDATE: Grand jury to determine whether to indict "Test Drive" shooter
MEDFORD, Ore. -- The so-called "Test Drive" shooting case will be presented to a grand jury today.
A grand jury will meet Tuesday to determine whether to indict the suspect on charges regarding the shooting of a Lithia Toyota salesman.
Police say Clayton Emil Huff, 49 of Eagle Point, shot 32-year-old Robert Joe Johnson in the stomach Saturday while test driving a Mustang from Lithia Toyota on East McAndrews Road. They say the two were about to switch drivers when Huff ordered Johnson to get in the trunk, and Johnson refused. Police say that's when Huff shot him. Police found the wounded Johnson laying in the parking lot of Medford's First Church of the Nazarene.
Huff got away in the car he was test driving, leading to a car chase all the way to Obenchain Road east of Eagle Point.
Medford Police Lieutenant Bob Hansen says detectives are looking into whether Huff and Johnson knew each other.
Hansen also says they're investigating whether it was a drug deal gone bad. Police say there is not enough evidence to confirm any of these suspicions, but they're going into the investigation "considering every possible situation," because an event like this is so "random" and "rare," Hansen said.
Huff remains in Jackson County Jail on $3 million bail. He requested a public defender. He'll be in court again March 8 for a preliminary hearing.
Johnson was released from Rogue Valley Medical Center Monday morning. Police say he will make a full recovery.
The investigation is in the hands of Jackson County's assault and major investigations unit.
